You often hear and see online and/or in books that trends are bad for you , that you should stay away from them , websites like logolounge show them every year ( they don't actually say you should stay away from them but showcase them so you can keep your eye sharp and your logos unique).

But what do you think of trends? do you think that they are bad and they should be put down, or rather be used as a guideline against what not to do?

I think that you should be up to date with them as they help you avoid doing something that you will regret later. But i also think you should use bits of them, i mean if people wouldn't like something, some bit of it as little as it would be, they would not be trends they would just be logos, so i try and find the original concept behind certain trends and keep it in mind for the future, however i do not encourage you use them completly.
  • Mood: Optimism
  • Listening to: all sorts of crazy music
  • Reading: softaware menus :)
  • Watching: time go by
  • Playing: do i look like i'm playing? :D
  • Eating: food....?
  • Drinking: Milk..and a lot of coffee...with milk :D

You have to resolve the problem of the client, if a trend is the best solution out there, then you will use it, if not you don't. All the clients don't have the same budget or the same level of competition, the small ones can use all kind of logos, so at least you have a client with a budget of 50k uss, use all the trends that you want.

so you would use a trend because the client asked for it or because it's easier do develop ?
i mean i agree with simple ideas but don't you think it affects you as a designer as well? i mean you as an example do some really great work , so would you use that trendy logo for your portfolio?

Theres a difference in the way you use a trend, you can make it or you can be the last one on use it.
Theres also historical trends like dadaism, futurism, minimalism, its very difficult to design something without a good base, using this trends is a nice way to start. But Im not saying that you need to take the trend copy/paste and sell it, you can make that other trends shine on your work and make them yours.

Remember the trends are good when you made them, not when you follow them.

Trends are not my thing, but some clients might even ask for a logo in this or that trend, even without actually saying "I want to use x trend" They say things like "I want a logo that is on the style of this and that store or thing..." So in the end, you get stuck with a trend...

Anyways, you should always try to be as unique as possible, but bear in mind, that every logo you do will have another one that looks alike, just because you haven't found it, doesn't mean it's not there...
